After the Second World War, the US army left thousands of Willys Jeeps in the Philipines. Since then, this
vehicle has been adapted and is now called the "jeepney". It is so well known that it has become sort of a
trademark for the country. A whole industry has developed around the jeepney. One can buy an engine in one shop,
chassis frames in another, body parts yet in another one, and so one. One can literally buy all the pieces and
build one's own jeepney! Shining metal, bright colors and dozens of ornaments further personalize each vehicle.
The most ornate ones can be found on Manila's city services. The rural ones are more "down to earth" and are
used to transport goods and passengers. Shown are some typical examples in Manila and in Olongapo. In the
latter city each route has its own color of jeepney.
